BOOMTOWN PARCELS NOW AVAILABLE!
Steelhead Boomtown is now booking! South of the present Steelhead City, this exciting new sim will be at a higher elevation than the other sims with mines running underneath and a dam upon the river. Reservations are now being accepted. Contact TotalLunar Eclipse for more information.

STEELHEAD HAS A NEW LIBRARY
(photo by Krystine Qinan)Steelhead's new library was named by Eugenia Burton, who won a trophy designed by Lumina and $1000L. A plaque or a copy of the trophy will be placed at the library with the winning essay. Here is Eugenia's winning essay:

"I am of the opinion that doesn't need to be a lot of frills for the names of such things as libraries. It will be as substantial a building, as respected a repository, and as honorable an institution with a simple name as it would be with a more fanciful one. I am too new to Steelhead to know of anyone in its history that would be deserving of the honor of having a library named after him or her. So, as I see it, the name 'The Steelhead Public Library' is immensely suitable. It is a good name. It is a sturdy name. It is a respectable name. It's a good civic name that includes the name of our fair city! We are rightfully proud of our beautiful homeland and putting the name of the town upon the name of the library is an honor to the library as well as to the community. If we feel pride in our city, we will feel equal pride in our library - and well we should. The new library building is a beautiful structure crafted by our very own TotalLunar Eclipse. It is not affiliated with any other libraries - it is *our* library and *our's* alone! It is staffed by citizens of Steelhead. It is maintained by citizens of Steelhead. It will be as much a part of Steelhead as the hotel or the town hall. It will be as if it belongs to each of us, with a good, civic name like 'The Steelhead Public Library' and that is my vote for its official name."

LIBRARY DEDICATION SPEECH (excerpted)
by CeAire DeCosta

...I started thinking about how we could give something back to our new community. I started thinking about a library since Hawc and I have attended several events at the Caledon libraries and have always enjoyed ourselves immensely each time. I believed we could do the same here and he was in full agreement.

Neither of us are librarians, nor do we play ones on TV! I contacted Sir JJ Drinkwater of the Caledon Libraries and asked for his future assistance. He replied that he could not undertake another library venture at the time, but would provide me with the necessary tools to get started and copies of the Caledon Library collections. I gulped and said okay, but wasn’t sure I’d know what to do with the stuff once I got it! The sun, moon and stars had to be in perfect alignment when I suddenly got an IM from Sir JJ one evening telling me that he thought he had found a librarian to undertake the task of managing Hawc’s and my fledgling dream. We were at one of our Friday night dances while he’s telling me about one Miss Riven Homewood with whom he would arrange for us to meet very soon. Surprisingly (or fate!) I found myself studying the bobbing nametags over the dancing avatars and suddenly standing out was Riven’s name! She was a new citizen of Steelhead/Harborside! After badgering poor Lunar half-to-death on what we thought the library build should be, he pretty much ignored us and then presented us with something far beyond and nicer than we ever could have expected or imagined! You are standing in and looking at a virtual work of art from a dedicated person who can take a single plain box prim (my specialty) and work magic with it. I defy anyone to tell me that it is not “real” because it is not real brick and wood. It is real because it was made with a heart.

So here we are at a new beginning. This dedication actually has four parts. First and foremost this library is dedicated to the citizens of Steelhead, Harborside, Boomtown, and any expansions that the future holds. We have the start of something special here. We are building a virtual community of people from all over the world, that regardless of our national origins and differences we are finding commonalities in a very unlikely place called Second Life. When Hawc and I first joined we came because we could see the educational possibilities to teach in SL, but little dreamed that we would also be finding and becoming parts of a vast social global network where we are finding that folks in other parts of the world are not that much different than we are, with the same hopes, dreams, and fears we all share.

Here, we can set the fears aside and we can have hope and dream dreams.

This is your library. It will become what you want it to be. Without books, the world would be very poor indeed. I also urge you to support your RL libraries in your communities. Many are being forced to curtail their services because of budget problems and sometimes they even have to shut their doors. May the doors on this library never be shuttered.

HARBORSIDE IS HERE!
As a holiday "present" for all of us, Steelhead Harborside landed on Dec. 24! The sim was moved to the north of the City and opened to residents on the 27th. Residents quickly put up tents, caravans, small cabins, and tiny log homes and the silliness soon ensued with dogsled races and other fun. "We had a lot of people wanting residential land in Steelhead, yet we were only one sim. Desmond (Caledon's Guvnah), as well as other people, desired growth in Steelhead so hence the reason for us growing," said manager TotalLunar Eclipse. "I forsee Steelhead becoming quite the town. I will cap Steelhead so its not so big, but in general I have nigh hopes for growth."

It is not too late to be a Harborside resident as three 1024/six 512 lots are still available. Contact TotalLunar Eclipse for more information.

WATCH YOUR PRIMS AND LAND BORDERS
Residents are asked to please watch out for any prims extending outside of their land borders as they use the overall prim count of the sim. Also, make sure that items are set to the group as they will be returned otherwise.

FRIENDSHIPS EXTENDED TO OTHER SIMS
Steelhead has extended friendships and welcomes to the sims of Deadwood and Taupo. Deadwood is a historical Wild West RP sim with strict RP rules (such as no non-humans allowed), so please be mindful of this while visiting. In the past, the medieval, magical lands of Taupo and Steelhead have exchanged flags and made jewelry gifts for one of our events and Lunar has helped them with their cloak industry. His Majesty Dennis Albion visited the Jan. 8 town meeting and has invited Steelhead residents to participate in their upcoming fashion show.

MEQAL ON THE MENDSteelhead old-timers may remember resident MeQal Anna. Even though he is no longer in SL, Dr. Mason and Sheriff Ortega still communicate with him regularly through the Capper group (from where Darien invited the two over to SL in the first place). MeQal was in the hospital after having a stroke on New Year's Eve and doctors were also checking for an aneurysm. His real name and phone number to the hospital were provided so friends could check up on him. He arrived home the night of Jan. 3 and let everyone know that he was OK except for some numbness in his right hand, trouble kicking with his right foot, and difficulty swallowing. The doctors found no aneurysm. He was told to spend the week in bed, but insisted on sitting at the computer while on the mend.

He also had an interesting story to tell about comparing tattoos with his nurse. But that's not fit for publication in the Anvil ;)

THEATRE REBUILDING IN THE WORKS
By popular demand, Lunar is rebuilding the theatre. He will be basing its look upon that of the New York Theatre.

STEELHEAD FROM THE SKY
New Steelhead resident Zoe Connolly, owner of the Harborside Air Station, took this machinima of her flight over the sim...

WHAT IS "GASLAMP FANTASY"?
by Fuzzball Ortega

For the past year, Steelhead has classified itself as the "Weird Wild West". A year later, we're still weird, but Steelhead has matured. Here's a small sample of who lives here: our esteemed manager is a moon elf and our other manager makes the evil geniuses look like seventh grade science class nerds. Darien Mason has been possessed by Bloodwing, his daughter's a steam-powered android, and his son's a neko...you get the general idea. "Steampunk" just didn't cut it for us.

We are recreating the Pacific Northwest, which was different at that time [the 1890s], and it also makes us way different from any other "Western" sim. It wasn't until the Europa Consulate arrived here in Steelhead and I learned of the Girl Genius web comic that I found our perfect classification: "Gears, fantastic airships, mechanized life and Frankenstein's monsters. Journeys to the bottom of the sea and the center of the Earth, incredible thinking machines and lots of mad scientists--all with a lovely pseudo-historical flair!" This is how Phil Foglio's wife [of Girl Genius] describes "gaslamp fantasy" and we think it fits Steelhead to a T.

NEW TOWN HALL COMPLETED

TotalLunar Eclipse has finished a beautiful build for the new Steelhead Town Hall, complete with a new meeting room, managers' offices, Anvil office, medical clinic, and jail...Still no word as to the jail's resident rodent.

HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS FOR THE TREE
Citizens are being asked to create a 10 prim ornament for the tree outside the Ballroom and submit them to Lumina Elvejhem, who has also decorated the town and created a skating pond at the Gardens for us. Please try to do better than Lunar, who says he is making a gray box.

NOT JUST FOR DECORATION
The mailbox in the front of Town Hall actually serves a purpose! You may drop notecards in it with items for the town meeting agenda or ideas for upcoming Steelhead events.

WE HAVE A FLIKR GROUP ON THE AETHERNET
Do you have photos of Steelhead and more that you'd like to share? Post them in the new Steelhead in SL Flikr group!

SALUTING OUR TROOPS MILITARY EVENT

Military review (photo courtesy: Edward Pearse)

The "Saluting Our Troops" event was held in Steelhead Nov. 17 in honor of Remembrance Day and Veterans Day. Military displays could be found around Steelhead and there were presentations, a horse race, a military ball, and an infantry and cavalry parade and review by dignitaries that was marshalled by Hawc Decosta.
Lumina Elvejhem was the winner of the horse race and the Military Ball was a social affair sponsored by Remington Pinion and Krystine Qinan of Steelhead. Many thanks to organizers Hawc and CeAire DeCosta, Dominic Roffo,
Christine McAllister, Remington Pinion, and Krystine Qinan, as well as other Steelhead citizens who helped to make it a success.

STEELHEAD IN THE NEWS
Dr. Mason recently went on the Dr. O show to promote Steelhead and Harborside. We would like to thank him, Guvnah Desmond Shang, and Steelhead's citizens who have been spreading the word about our lovely sim!

The overall prim count is becoming a bit scarier than some of the things that happen at the Bloodwing Foundation. Please remember to try to keep your prim count as low as possible and pick up a prim counter map (only 2 prims!) at Town Hall.

A NEW LOOK FOR THE BAY
Was it a red tide? An algae bloom from beyond? In late October, the waters of the Bay took on an unusual shade of lava. "Don't walk in it...swim in it...or drink it," said Lumina Elvejhem. "It will not feel nice and the fish are probably dead. Actually, don't fish in it either." Many were surprised that the dolphin seemed to be fine with it.

UPCOMING VETERANS/REMEMBRANCE DAY MILITARY EVENT
On November 17, please join us in Steelhead as we will be honoring veterans and the military with exhibits, small displays and camps, parades, a horse race, and a military ball. Some events will be specifically targeted to the Civil War and Armistice Day (since November 11 is Veteran's Day and the 23rd is Remembrance Day for Gettysburg). Steelhead will be having a ceremony as we erect a cenotaph/unknown soldier monument as well. Poppies and wreaths are available at Rosehaven Recipes. For more information, please contact organizers Hawc DeCosta or Dominic Roffo.

TOWN HALL CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS
The town hall is getting a new look! TotalLunar Eclipse is currently working on creating a new town hall building with meeting space, offices, and a new jail for the Sheriff. He "says" that this will be his last build. No word yet as to where the jail's resident rat will be relocated.

Dr. Jeremiah Mason on the loose

SHERIFF'S BLOTTER

One of Steelhead's longest-running local dramas has been that of the Bloodwing Foundation, which gives him plenty to handle at times. The Anvil asked the Sheriff about recent events:

Sheriff Ortega: "I let the Mason family handle the situation, although I did get a kick out of trying to get Jeremiah angry."
